“Star Trek™ Fleet Command” takes flight at SXSW 2022

David Eckelberry, Scopely’s Vice President & General Manager of Product for “Star Trek™ Fleet Command,” Erika Winterholler, Vice President of Licensing, Video Games at Paramount, and Dean Takahashi, Lead Writer at VentureBeat, took to the SXSW stage Monday, March 14 to talk all things “Star Trek™ Fleet Command” during their panel Translating an Iconic Universe into a Video Game.”

Moderated by Dean, the three discussed how Scopely has worked with its longtime partner Paramount to immerse fans in the “Star Trek” universe to ultimately deepen the connection to every character and arc, putting them in control of how they interact with the story.

In addition to providing insight into developing the award-winning game, David gave attendees a glimpse into how the team at DIGIT, a Scopely Studio, aims to create the most immersive playground possible for players. He discussed how characters from various generations of the iconic universe are brought to life on mobile and PC, which allows players to embrace the IP how they want to, when they want to. As David mentioned:

Diversity and depth is critical to the game experience.”

The panel also covered the significant relationship needed between games companies and IP holders–such as Scopely and Paramount–to make a successful experience. Erika and David talked about how their trusted relationship has allowed for endless collaboration opportunities. Together the teams have been able to deliver a truly authentic experience that balances the nostalgic brand with player agency, creating a strong sense of community and belonging that keeps players coming back.

The panel was selected as a part of SXSW’s PanelPicker opportunity where the community and judges voted on their top panel choices for this year’s conference.

Thank you to our speakers, our valuable partners at Paramount, all who attended the panel and to Dean for moderating! 🖖🚀
