Tim O’Brien Joins Scopely Board of Directors

Chief Revenue Officer brings unique expertise across games to elevated responsibilities

Scopely today announced that it has appointed veteran mobile games executive and Scopely Chief Revenue Officer Tim O’Brien to the company’s Board of Directors. Since joining the business in 2014, Tim has been instrumental in the strategic growth of Scopely. Not only has Tim significantly expanded the company’s core publishing functions around the world, he has helped scale the business 35x—driving Scopely to its first $1 billion in revenue.

“Tim has been instrumental in driving our strategy and teams, building the culture and organization upon which Scopely has grown into a global leader in mobile games, including the company’s Studio Ecosystem, publishing model, and key IP partnerships with a diverse set of licensors,” said Scopely co-CEO & Board Member Javier Ferreira. “We could not have accomplished what we have the last six years without him, and I am thrilled to formally have his voice on our Board as we move into one of the most exciting phases of our journey.”

Walter Driver, Scopely co-founder, co-CEO & Chairman of the Board added, “Tim has transformed Scopely over the last six years, making an immeasurable impact on the success and durability of our business. His ability to create outstanding long-term value for strategic partners is second to none and he has been at the heart of building one of the most diverse and successful portfolios of any mobile games company along with a highly effective cross-functional team. Tim’s expertise and strategic perspective will be invaluable on our Board, and we are honored to have him.”

The announcement follows a number of recent milestones for Scopely, including the worldwide launch of new mobile game Scrabble® GO earlier this month, the recent acquisition of MARVEL Strike Force makers FoxNext Games LA, and expansion across Europe and Asia.

Mark Terbeek, Partner at Greycroft & Scopely Board Member, added, “Over the past six years, Tim has had a major hand in Scopely’s exponential growth—bringing to life the vision of the company we first saw during our initial seed investment. In large part due to his leadership and unrivaled relationships, Scopely has set itself apart in the industry by consistently delivering top-grossing franchises across multiple genres. We are confident that Tim’s continued involvement in the strategic direction of the company, now as a Board member, will only bring more success in years to come.”

“It’s been the privilege of my professional career to contribute to Scopely’s tremendous growth from 50 employees when I joined, to now more than 800 employees globally and a $1.7B valuation,” said O’Brien. “I am grateful to work alongside the outstanding talent at Scopely and toward our shared goal of creating unforgettable long-term experiences that become part of our players’ lives for years to come. I look forward to continuing that work as a member of the Board.”

With more than two decades of experience at both high-growth startups and major media companies—since joining Scopely in 2014, Tim has exponentially expanded the company’s external relationships with platforms, IP holders and game development studios, and has driven the growth of its ads business; corporate and business development, which includes M&A; marketing and creative; user acquisition; and business affairs functions, among many other contributions.

Prior to Scopely, Tim served as Vice President of Worldwide Business Development at Disney Interactive, where he oversaw business development, distribution, network operations and ad sales for a large slate of mobile, console and online digital properties. He launched some of the division’s most successful franchises including Disney Infinity, Where’s My Water, Marvel: Avengers Alliance and Club Penguin—helping establish the brand as a world-class publisher.

Earlier in his career, Tim served as Vice President of Business Development at Tapulous, which was acquired by The Walt Disney Company during his tenure. Tim built the Tapulous business from the ground up, driving partnerships and content for its leading game Tap Tap Revenge. Prior to Tapulous, Tim served as Vice President of Business Development at Gydget (previously known as Attendio), one of the first companies to build a product on the Facebook platform. Prior to Gydget, Tim was Director of Business Development at StubHub where he created the music industry’s first market-driven auction.
